Dave

When I began my career as a therapist ten years ago, I was oblivious to the vast and unknown impacts of childhood trauma. Currently, I find myself working with trauma every day, as well as with issues related to anger, anxiety, relationship conflicts, grief, and legal issues. Starting my own practice has reignited my love for being a helping professional. I am now able to offer a flexible schedule, connect with clients of all populations, and be my own type of therapist.

     Professional Background

Through all my years as a therapist, I have developed a professional approach that speaks to my true character.  To be successful in therapy, both as a client and a clinician, you must be open, honest, vulnerable, and patient.  Developing a strong human connection begins with trust, confidence, and empathy.  I strive to have all of my clients recognize these traits in me within the first session.

I began my time in the field working with families involved in foster care and state services in Omaha, Nebraska, working for Capstone Behavioral Health.  Seeing the vast amount of trauma these children were experiencing inspired me to continue my education.  My focus remained with at-risk youth and marginalized families across the Omaha metro area for the next five years.  I gained a degree in Drug and Alcohol Counseling and became highly involved in the justice systems, such as probation and CPS and substance abuse programs.

Shortly after moving to Colorado, I joined AllHealth Network as a school-based therapist at Cherry Creek High School, working with +/- 20 youth a week, focusing on topics of academics, drug use, trauma, suicidality, self-harm, family dysfunction, physical / emotional / sexual abuse, sexuality and gender identity, violence, etc.  With such a high demand, I began extensive training around trauma and suicidality.  I continue to be thankful for AllHealth for the training and experience I gained, and credit those years as key developmental points of my career.

Grateful Day Counseling started as a dream of mine during my first years of being a therapist and finally came to fruition in June 2024.  I utilize a company called Alma to help manage insurance claims, set up scheduling, maintain records, and utilize their continued education.   I love being able to trust in my skills and passion to provide for my family, positively contribute to my community, and help individuals make awakening changes to their mental and physical health.

     Personal Info

Unlike many therapists, I enjoy sharing elements of my personal life with my clients, whether it be stories, past successes or failures, or general updates.  We are all social creatures with our own uniqueness.  Sharing the good and bad parts of our lives helps us create bonds and promote unity, understanding, and acceptance.

First and foremost, I have always prioritized my family.  I was raised in a small farming town in southeast Nebraska, where my single mother married my step-father when I was six years old.  I travel back to DuBois several times a year with my wife of 15 years and our 10 year old twins.  My wife is a high school teacher in Littelton.  My son has aspirations of being a professional lacrosse player, whereas my daughter spends her time with artistic crafts and creations.  My family enjoys going to music festivals, doing our annual Red Rocks concerts, and exploring all that music has to offer.  Other hobbies of mine include camping, disc golf, gardening, connecting with "chosen Phamily", and generally being outside with my family and dogs. â€‹

An important part of my professional and personal life involves being a strong Ally for those that have been marginalized or oppressed in our society.  I am an advocate for justice, for peace, for tolerance, and for respect for all.  I believe in tearing down walls that divide us, while sharing our resources to promote love and unity.

All of my clients are encouraged to ask me any questions as we continue our services, to help them gain more confidence in exploring areas that are hard to discuss.  I hope all of my clients can be an "open book" when working with me, so I strive to promote the same openness and appreciation.  â€‹
